One thing that just about everyone can agree on is the fact that our children are without a doubt the most valuable things in our lives. This being the case, parents of young children will go to any lengths to make sure that their kids are safe and sound at all times.
I, and every other parent out there, want their kids to be safe in any environment, and this is especially true when we are transporting our children in a vehicle. As everyone knows, the road can be a very dangerous place to be, and even if the driver is cautious and responsible it is impossible for them to control the actions of other motorists.
This means that we as parents will want to take every precaution to preclude the possibility of injury to our loved ones, and in the case of small children one of the things that we will need to do is make sure that our child has the best infant car seat that we can get our hands on.
Infant car safety seats are not all created equal, and in this article I will discuss some of the characteristics that all good infant car safety seats should have. After that, a review will be provided of one of the best seats on the market, the Britax B-Safe Infant car seat.
Characteristics of a good car seat
When it comes time for you to go shopping for a great car safety seat, there are definitely certain things you should be looking for that will minimize the risk of injury to your baby in the event of an accident.
1. How easy is it to use?
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has come up with a rating system that grades the ease of use of infant safety car seats. It uses the star system, with one star being the lowest possible rating and five stars being the highest. When you purchase an infant safety seat, you should make sure to get one with the highest number of stars possible. This will give you a good idea of how easy it is to install, how comfortable your child will be, and how easy to understand the instructions are.
2. Does it have a base?
A good infant car seat should come with a sturdy plastic base. This base is securely fastened to your car. You buckle your child into the car seat, and fasten the car seat to the base. After the trip, you can unfasten the car seat from the base and take it and your baby with you.
3. Does it come with a safety harness?
All newer infant car seats should have a five point safety system. There should be straps for each shoulder, each leg, and one that runs down the middle. This will protect your baby from being injured by the straps in the event of a car crash.
4. Is it easily adjustable?
Let’s face it, our babies grow. As they do, you will want to have a safety seat that has easy to use adjustments that will allow the seat to grow with your child.
5. Is it LATCH compatible?
Older model child car seats used the seat belt to secure the seat. Newer car seats should ship with the LATCH system, which allows the car seat to be attached directly to the vehicle, providing superior levels of safety.
6. Is it easy to clean?
Babies make messes, and having a car seat that is easy to clean will be a blessing for you. Make sure that the car seat has a removable cover that is machine washable.
7. Does it have side impact protection?
If an accident does occur, the car can be impacted from any direction, including the side. Because of this, it’s important to purchase a seat that has protective side impact features.
When I went shopping for a seat for my child, I kept all of these factors in mind. The seat that I eventually settled on was the Britax B-Safe
I did so because the Britax seat has all of the features I mentioned above, and quite a few more. It has a five point safety harness which is tangle free, and it has a space age material lining it that protects against side impacts, at the same time supporting my child’s head and neck.
I has four different harness heights and adjustable buckles that will keep my child comfortable as she grows. It has an adjustable base and is easily installed into my child’s stroller. It’s also LATCH ready for extra protection.
It has removable liners and comfort pillows, and to top it all off it is even certified for aircraft travel. With all these features, I’m sure you can see why I bought it, and I’m sure you are ready to check it out here for yourself!
I have tried to find some cons to go with all of these pros, but all I can say is that for the price that I paid it has all of the features a proud parent would want for their child. I compared it to similar car seats such as the Chicco Keyfit 30, but after the comparison I found the Britax to be the superior model.
If you’re a parent such as myself who wants a great car seat for their child at a great price, you will want to take a look at the Britax B-Safe infant car seat. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
